Marta
J. Olson is
a lifetime summer resident of Mackinac Island. She has enjoyed photography
since a young child and a decade ago turned her creative expression to
painting. Although she develops her skills with occasional workshops,
she is primarily self-taught and loves the process of experimenting on
her own with new techniques and approaches. She enjoys studying the works
of the masters, as well as contemporary painters, for fresh inspiration
for her art. Mackinac, her favorite subject, offers her limitless opportunities
to express her appreciation of the northern landscape. Marta's professional career has included positions in hotel management, business teaching, and computer marketing, sales, and support. She received her B.A. from the University of Michigan and M.B.A. from Michigan State University. Marta lives (and paints) on Mackinac Island during the summer months. The rest of the year she and her husband Peter and two daughters, Brita and Kaia, live in Harbor Springs. Marta owns a web design business, Mintaka Design, which specializes in creating web sites for small and medium sized businesses, individuals, and nonprofit organizations. Her web work offers yet another outlet for creativity as she enjoys designing sites and taking photographs for her clients. She spends much of her free time exploring the north with her digital camera. Marta's art has received honors in Michigan juried shows in Hillsdale and Petoskey. She exhibits in three annual Mackinac Seven Art Group shows on the island and her work can be found in the Victorian Summer gift shop on Mackinac. In her own words... Painting is a way for me to express my love of the natural world, especially my love for Mackinac. Trying to capture the spirituality and seasons of the Island is a delightful process for me. The light here is always changing and it is a wonderful challenge to teach myself to see its effect on the water, sky, and trees... I thrive on the solitude that painting affords me while at the same time I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the support and companionship of my fellow artists in the Mackinac Seven Art Group.
