Skull Cave

Many small caves can be found on Mackinac, but the most well-known is Skull Cave. This cave was so named by the English fur trader, Alexander Henry who hid there while escaping from the Indians during the Pontiac Uprising in 1763. Wawatam, an Indian friend of Henry guided him to this site for refuge.

According to his written account of the adventure, Henry spent an uneasy night sleeping on the floor of the cave which he found the next morning to be littered with human bones and skulls.
